I then got some cut offs from my local timber yard, the same thickness of the shelf and slotted them in at each end glued to strengthen the ends. These shelves have been up for 4 years now and now going to add 2 more to the other side of the hearth. What is the maximum you would be able to cut from each end what is the distance between the end of the metal support bar and the end end of the shelf as purchased? I also peeled off the edges of the cutoffs and reapplied to the shelf.
Because peeling causes the ends to curl the way I pulled it off, being a bit impatient I had to use some small nails along with glue to reattach, but the ends, while more exposed than the described job above, are obscure enough not to worry about it. Thanks for the tip — been hesitant to invest in even the inexpensive Lack shelf for fear of ruining it through end cuts!
